A rowdy Norse brawler with more brains than its cartoonish violence first suggests, Viking Squad turns the road to Valhalla into a bruising side-scrolling campaign. Loki has shut the heroes out of the afterlife, and a band of determined warriors must carve through his forces to put the realms right. The mood lands somewhere between an old-school arcade beat ’em up and a Saturday-morning mythological adventure: loud, colorful, funny, and still demanding when enemies begin to crowd the screen.

Combat plays out across several lanes rather than a single flat path, so positioning matters as much as swinging a weapon. Players move between foreground and background lanes, time attacks, avoid incoming threats, and work together to keep dangerous foes from surrounding the party. Each warrior carries a distinct weapon and fighting style, encouraging different roles in a three-player group, whether that means controlling space, dealing heavy damage, or supporting teammates during hectic encounters. Between battles, new gear and weapons improve characters and allow for more specialized builds, while devotion to Norse gods opens further advantages and challenges as the adventure progresses.

The strongest feature is its cooperative design: massive combined attacks make coordinated play feel genuinely rewarding instead of merely letting extra players add chaos. Local and online three-player co-op both suit the format, though solo players can still enjoy the campaign’s approachable controls and deliberately paced progression. Jesse Turner’s hand-drawn art gives every Viking, monster, and battlefield a bold illustrated look, with lively animation that keeps repeated brawls visually fresh. Fans of Castle Crashers, Golden Axe, or Streets of Rage-style co-op action should find plenty to like, especially if they want a more tactical lane-based take on the genre; veterans get room to master team synergy, while newcomers get an immediately readable and entertaining Norse romp.
