A Cold War gone hot across Asia gives Wargame: Red Dragon its enormous, tense battlefield identity. Set in an alternate 1991 conflict, Eugen Systems’ real-time strategy game pits NATO-aligned forces against Communist armies, with Japan, the Koreas, China, Australia, New Zealand, and other nations widening the series’ usual European focus. The tone is clinical, demanding, and spectacular: artillery tears through forests, helicopters hunt armor columns, and naval gunfire supports beach landings while every mistake can erase an expensive force. Rather than glorifying individual heroes, it makes you think like a commander managing a sprawling combined-arms war.

Battles revolve around building a customized deck from more than a thousand authentic military units, then deploying those forces with limited command points and keeping them supplied with fuel and ammunition. Tanks, infantry, recon teams, anti-air vehicles, aircraft, helicopters, ships, and amphibious transports all fill distinct roles, so success depends on sight lines, terrain, concealment, and coordinated counters rather than simply fielding the strongest units. There is no traditional base-building loop; reinforcements arrive from off-map, while logistics vehicles keep frontline troops operational and command units secure captured sectors. Dynamic single-player campaigns offer a strategic map layer alongside real-time engagements, while competitive multiplayer supports huge 10-versus-10 clashes that demand communication and a tolerance for long, punishing matches.

Its standout quality is scale without abandoning tactical detail. A forest can conceal infantry with lethal anti-tank missiles, a ridge can make or break an armored push, and the addition of naval combat creates coastal maps where sea control matters as much as land dominance. The sheer roster rewards experimentation, but faction balance, deck construction, and the dense interface give it a steep learning curve. Players who enjoy Steel Division, Command & Conquer’s more deliberate strategy, or the methodical military sandbox of WARNO find much to appreciate, especially if they want multiplayer built around teamwork rather than fast reflexes.
