Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade (v1.0)

Kronus becomes a brutal planetary battleground where seven Warhammer 40,000 factions tear through deserts, ruins, jungles, and buried tomb complexes for total control. Dark Crusade is a real-time strategy expansion that trades a linear campaign for a risk-filled conquest map, letting Space Marines, Chaos, Orks, Eldar, Imperial Guard, Tau, or Necrons write their own version of the war. Its atmosphere is pure 40K: chainswords roar, artillery levels fortifications, and ancient Necron crypts awaken beneath the sands. Every army feels distinct, from the Tau’s disciplined ranged formations to the Orks’ ramshackle, momentum-driven hordes.

Campaign turns begin on a planetary map, where you choose which territory to invade, which enemy to pressure, and when to defend your own holdings. Individual battles follow the series’ familiar base-building RTS formula: capture strategic points, secure resources, construct production structures, recruit squads, and push toward victory through annihilation or key-objective control. Infantry units gain value from cover, morale, upgrades, commanders, and well-timed support abilities, while vehicles and super-heavy units can turn a stalled frontline into a rout. Each faction’s commander collects wargear across the campaign, allowing meaningful customization through improved weapons, defensive equipment, and special powers; enemy strongholds provide the toughest encounters, built around faction-specific layouts and scripted defenses.

The major appeal lies in how much freedom the campaign provides without losing the focused, aggressive pacing of Dawn of War. Conquering Kronus as the relentless Necrons plays nothing like holding territory with the defensive Imperial Guard, and each army has its own opening narration and final objective. The two added factions are more than roster padding: Tau reward patient firepower management, while Necrons field slow, durable forces with unusual economy and reinforcement rules. Multiplayer supports large eight-player clashes across new maps, and the game’s enduring mod scene further extends its life.
