Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Winter Assault turns Relic’s already ferocious real-time strategy formula into a colder, heavier war of attrition. Set on the frozen world of Lorn V, the expansion pits Imperial Guard, Eldar, Orks, and Chaos Space Marines against one another in a race for a buried superweapon. The new Imperial Guard faction brings a very different battlefield mood: massed infantry, entrenched gun lines, artillery support, and tanks that feel built to flatten entire city blocks. Its grim sci-fi warfare is loud, fast, and brutal rather than careful or diplomatic.

Matches revolve around capturing strategic points, generating requisition and power, constructing a base, and escalating through a faction-specific tech tree. Players reinforce squads on the move, attach specialist weapons, deploy commanders, and use cover and ruined buildings to control firing lanes across snowbound maps. Imperial Guard commanders rely on numbers and disciplined ranged fire, but their late-game armor—especially the Baneblade super-heavy tank—can radically change the pace of a battle. The campaign offers separate Order and Disorder routes, letting players command Imperial Guard and Eldar on one side or Orks and Chaos on the other, while skirmish mode provides a useful place to test factions against AI opponents.

Winter Assault stands out because it does more than add units; it gives Dawn of War a faction whose strengths demand a new mindset. Guard armies reward layered defenses, combined arms, and holding ground until overwhelming firepower arrives, making them a satisfying contrast to the more aggressive Orks and Chaos forces. New winter arenas, urban terrain, interactive map elements, additional multiplayer maps, observer tools, and team-play options add meaningful longevity to the original game’s competitive mode. Fans of Company of Heroes, StarCraft, or the base Dawn of War who enjoy squad-focused RTS combat should find plenty here, while newcomers should expect an older but still readable strategy experience that rewards smart positioning over frantic clicking.
