WarPlan Pacific operates at the operational level, covering the conflict from December 1941 through 1945 and placing every major participant—as well as a long list of potential nations—within the same strategic framework. Its tone is methodical rather than cinematic: victories come from anticipating an opponent’s logistics, reconnaissance, and naval intentions several turns ahead. The scale is broad without reducing armies, aircraft, and fleets to meaningless abstractions.

Players direct land formations, air wings, and naval task forces, balancing offensives with the fuel, resources, and convoy protection needed to sustain them. Ground combat uses operation points, allowing coordinated multi-hex assaults, follow-up moves, and opportunities to rupture a frontline instead of simply trading attacks along a static border. Air power can strike chosen targets, assist ground operations, shield shipping, or raid enemy convoys, while sea warfare ranges from carrier clashes and submarine hunts to surface engagements, pursuits, raids, and dangerous night actions. Fog of war, varying detection levels, communications intelligence, terrain effects, weather, zones of control, and airfield capacity ensure that even a powerful force can fail if it advances without proper information and support.

WarPlan Pacific stands out through its attempt to make the whole theatre manageable at once, from China and Southeast Asia to the Central Pacific and the American industrial lifeline. Its modified map scale and clear unit representation keep the campaign moving, yet the number of choices around naval scouting and supply rewards serious study. Fans of WarPlan Europe, Strategic Command, or larger-scale Gary Grigsby-style campaigns find a more accessible but still demanding alternative here. Newcomers to hardcore wargames may need patience with its systems, while veteran armchair generals get a deep sandbox for rewriting the Pacific conflict.
