Wartales is an open-world tactical RPG built around leading a customizable company through a grounded medieval setting where famine, banditry, and political decay define everyday life. Rather than saving the realm, you hunt bounties, take contracts, raid ruins, and decide how far your crew bends its principles to stay fed. Its tone is grim without becoming joyless, mixing desperate battles and harsh travel with the satisfaction of building a feared, well-equipped outfit.

Every expedition begins with practical concerns: recruit specialists, buy supplies, manage wages, keep morale high, and choose which jobs are worth the risk. Combat plays out in deliberate turn-based encounters on compact battlefields, where positioning, weapon reach, class abilities, and enemy engagement matter more than simply surrounding a target. Fighters can pin opponents in place, rangers dart between vulnerable enemies, archers control lanes, and unusual recruits such as animals add their own tactical wrinkles. Outside combat, the party travels across regions filled with towns, mines, camps, tombs, and ruins, gathering materials for crafting while developing camp facilities that improve recovery, food production, and efficiency. Character builds offer plenty of room to experiment, while difficulty options and scalable or region-locked progression let players shape the pace of the campaign.

What separates Wartales from many fantasy RPGs is its commitment to the life of a working mercenary company. Victories feel earned because every new weapon, camp upgrade, and capable recruit comes from careful planning rather than destiny. The painterly world looks inviting from a distance, yet its stories regularly force uncomfortable choices involving criminals, desperate civilians, and rival factions. Solo players get a substantial sandbox campaign, while online co-op lets up to four players share the company and its decisions. Fans of Battle Brothers, XCOM’s tactical tension, or the open-ended travel of Mount & Blade should find plenty to enjoy, though newcomers should expect a demanding early game where poor preparation has lasting consequences.
