Witchaven II: Blood Vengeance

A grim first-person fantasy adventure picks up after an apparent victory and turns it into a lonely rescue mission. The witches of Char are gone, but the sorceress Circa-Argoth retaliates by stealing an entire population, leaving the warrior Grondoval to cross hostile lands alone. Witchaven II: Blood Vengeance carries the rough-edged attitude of mid-1990s PC action games: gloomy castles, monster-filled caverns, lethal traps, and a hero who solves most problems with steel. Its Build-engine presentation gives the world a distinctly old-school atmosphere, with chunky sprites, winding corridors, and a dark fantasy tone closer to a dungeon crawl than a polished modern RPG.

Combat revolves around searching labyrinthine levels, collecting keys and supplies, and cutting through creatures with an expanding arsenal of medieval weapons. Swords, axes, bows, daggers, enchanted gear, and magical attacks offer different approaches, while flaming arrows and the electric sword add welcome flair to the basic hack-and-slash action. Potions temporarily provide advantages such as increased strength, resistance to fire, and invisibility, encouraging players to save resources for ambushes and tougher encounters. Movement is more flexible than many contemporary shooters, allowing jumping, crouching, swimming, and occasional flight, though the game still demands careful navigation and frequent attention to hidden dangers.

What separates it from Doom-style shooters is its commitment to fantasy role-playing flavor, from weapon upgrades and consumables to spells that freeze, destroy, or immobilize enemies. Levels reward methodical exploration rather than pure speed, although their maze-like layouts and dated interface can be punishing by modern standards. The sequel is best approached as a preserved slice of 1996 design: awkward at times, atmospheric often, and satisfying when its combat rhythm clicks. Fans of Hexen, Heretic, and early first-person dungeon crawlers are the ideal audience, while newcomers should bring patience for old-school difficulty, obscure routes, and limited guidance.
