Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

An alternate 1961 America under Nazi rule gives this first-person shooter a furious, pulp-fiction charge that few modern campaigns can match. You play battered resistance icon B.J. Blazkowicz, returning from a hard-won European victory to find the United States conquered, propagandized, and desperately in need of a rebellion. MachineGames balances ugly occupation imagery with deliberately excessive sci-fi weaponry, pitch-black jokes, and a cast that is equal parts tragic, bizarre, and memorable. The result is a loud, angry single-player adventure that treats its Nazi-killing fantasy with both cathartic force and surprising emotional weight.

Combat moves at a frantic pace, encouraging B.J. to sprint, slide, lean from cover, and attack from multiple angles rather than simply trade shots behind a wall. Nearly every firearm can be dual-wielded, letting you pair shotguns, assault rifles, pistols, and heavy weapons for savage close-range encounters, while upgrades reward specific habits such as stealth kills, headshots, or aggressive dual-gun play. Levels range from ruined city streets and resistance hideouts to a devastated New Orleans and an absurdly dangerous trip beyond Earth, with collectibles, side objectives, and secret routes scattered through the campaign. B.J. also gains specialized traversal gear, opening alternate paths through environments and giving revisited areas more tactical flexibility, though the game remains a tightly directed story rather than an open-world sandbox.

What separates The New Colossus from many corridor shooters is its willingness to slow down for long, strange character scenes before unleashing another spectacular firefight. Its id Tech 6 presentation delivers crisp weapon feedback, detailed environments, and impressively smooth movement, while the campaign constantly changes the scale and tone of its set pieces. Difficulty can be punishing on higher settings, especially when armored enemies and commanders reinforce a room, but adjustable options make it approachable for players more interested in the narrative. Fans of Doom’s aggressive gunplay, BioShock’s alternate-history atmosphere, or Wolfenstein: The New Order’s character-driven action find plenty to enjoy, although veterans get the most from its relentless pace and returning cast.
