Shiokawa, a seemingly ordinary Japanese coastal town, decays into a nightmare of missing people, warped creatures, cursed schools, and gods that are far too old to understand. WORLD OF HORROR is a compact cosmic-horror RPG with roguelite structure, combining Lovecraftian dread with the grotesque body horror and unsettling visual language associated with Junji Ito. Its stark black-and-white art, deliberately drawn in MS Paint, turns every enemy portrait and event screen into something that looks like it should not exist. The mood is relentlessly oppressive, but the game’s dry, almost tabletop-like presentation keeps its terror clever rather than purely grim.

Each run asks you to pick an investigator and tackle a series of supernatural cases before the town’s Doom meter reaches its limit and an Old God fully awakens. You travel between locations such as hospitals, apartments, forests, schools, and the lighthouse, gathering clues while managing health, sanity, spells, equipment, allies, and dangerous curses. Combat is turn-based but more tactical than it first appears, letting you spend limited time units on attacks, preparation, defensive actions, or escape attempts when a fight turns ugly. Random events, branching choices, puzzles, and resource shortages mean that even a familiar mystery can collapse into a very different disaster on the next attempt.

What makes it memorable is how it transforms simple menus, pixel art, and text into sustained paranoia; a bad choice can cost precious stamina, raise Doom, or permanently twist your character’s condition. Mysteries feature alternate conclusions, varied enemy encounters, and multiple investigators with different strengths, giving the short cases strong replay value despite the game’s intentionally focused scope. The chiptune soundtrack adds an eerie, low-fi pulse that fits the retro interface perfectly, while the writing sells both absurd occult details and genuinely unnerving revelations. Fans of Darkest Dungeon, classic adventure games, roguelites, or interactive horror fiction will find plenty to admire, though newcomers should expect punishing runs and embrace failure as part of solving Shiokawa’s larger mystery.
