X4: Foundations (v9.0 & ALL DLC)

A living galaxy runs on trade routes, territorial wars, and the decisions made by every pilot, miner, trader, and fleet commander within it. X4: Foundations is a deep space sandbox that begins with a single ship and can grow into an industrial empire or military superpower. Its universe feels less like a sequence of missions and more like a machine already in motion, where factions expand, lose territory, need resources, and react to the chaos around them. The tone is methodical and demanding, but few space games offer this much freedom to define your own career.

Piloting is fully hands-on when you want it to be, from nimble scouts and fighters to enormous capital ships, with cockpit and external camera views available. You can take contracts, hunt pirates, scan stations, mine asteroids, haul cargo, board hostile vessels, or simply travel between sectors looking for profitable opportunities. Money funds better ships, hired crews, automated traders, mining fleets, and modular factories that produce the goods the universe needs. The real loop develops into management: assign orders, establish supply chains, construct stations piece by piece, and command fleets while the simulation continues to evolve around you. Multiple starting scenarios provide different allegiances, equipment, and early goals, though none lock you into a single path.

What makes X4 stand apart is its seamless sense of scale: you can leave your ship, cross a station dock, take another vessel, and personally assume command without breaking the illusion of place. Its economic simulation gives building and trading genuine weight, since factories depend on resources and wars create fresh demand for ships and weapons. The interface and learning curve can be intimidating, and large-scale administration rewards patience more than twitch reflexes, but that complexity is the point. Players who enjoy Elite Dangerous’ spacefaring atmosphere, EVE Online’s economy, or Mount & Blade’s rise-from-nothing ambition find a richer solo sandbox here, while veterans of the X series get the immense fleet and station management they expect.
