Zexion (v1.17)

Cypher-X72 is a hostile, labyrinthine alien planet where every sealed door and shadowy corridor hints at the technology needed to survive the next threat. Zexion casts players as Natu, a space warrior racing to locate the mysterious force known as Zexion before Orinth is destroyed, while ruthless warlords and pirates pursue the same prize for far less noble reasons. The tone lands somewhere between classic sci-fi adventure and tense arcade action, with strange ruins, dangerous machinery, and legendary horrors giving the journey a suitably isolated feel.

Natu navigates a large connected map, opening shortcuts and previously unreachable routes by collecting tools that alter both combat and movement. The Force Blaster fires a spread of shots in eight directions independently of movement, letting players pressure enemies while retreating, shove blocks into place, and interact with environmental obstacles. Later upgrades such as the Gravity Harness grant brief flight, turning familiar rooms into fresh traversal puzzles and encouraging regular returns to older areas. Progress depends on learning the planet’s layout, finding hidden upgrades and artifacts, and surviving demanding boss encounters that test positioning, weapon use, and mobility.

What separates Zexion from a straightforward retro shooter is how closely its exploration and combat systems feed into one another: a new weapon is as likely to reveal a secret route as it is to make a brutal enemy manageable. The world is designed around curiosity, with mysteries, concealed rewards, and alternate paths that reward players willing to inspect suspicious walls and revisit earlier regions. Once the main adventure is complete, an unlocked built-in randomizer reshuffles the experience for another run, giving dedicated players a reason to master its systems beyond the first clear. Fans of Metroid-style progression, especially those who enjoy independent aiming and challenging boss fights, should find plenty to like, while newcomers should expect a demanding but readable action-platforming adventure.
