Engardin is a fallen fantasy realm where divine order has collapsed, humanity clings to scattered settlements, and every beautiful ruin hides evidence of a civilization that failed. Afterimage is a hand-drawn action RPG and Metroidvania built around Renee, an amnesiac survivor searching for her missing mentor after a mysterious assault destroys her home. Its atmosphere balances lush forests, sacred ruins, flooded caverns, and haunted battlefields with a mournful post-catastrophe story. Beneath the colorful 2D artwork lies a demanding adventure about memory, survival, and deciding what kind of future remains for a broken world.

Renee travels through a large interconnected map, fighting corrupted creatures, avoiding environmental hazards, uncovering shortcuts, and returning to previously unreachable areas once she earns new traversal powers. Combat is fast and deliberate, with six weapon categories supporting markedly different approaches, while secondary weapons, armor, accessories, talents, and enemy-derived skills allow for extensive build experimentation. More than 170 enemy types and around 30 bosses keep the pressure high, especially when patterns, positioning, and smart use of healing resources matter more than reckless attacks. Defeated foes can provide powers called Afterimages, which improve combat options or open routes through the world, giving exploration a steady sense of forward momentum.

What separates Afterimage from many indie Metroidvanias is the sheer scale of its RPG systems and its unusually rich visual presentation, with frame-by-frame animation making enemies and locations feel alive even in a dying land. Dozens of NPCs offer side stories and quests, while hidden equipment, alternate paths, and multiple endings reward players willing to investigate beyond the main route. The orchestral soundtrack gives major discoveries and boss fights a grander, almost classic fantasy tone than the genre usually offers. Fans of Hollow Knight, Ori, and Castlevania who want heavier character building and a long, content-dense campaign should find plenty to enjoy, though newcomers should expect a challenging opening and a map that demands patience.
