A grieving village girl trades an ordinary future for forbidden knowledge in a bleak, beautifully researched vision of 19th-century rural Russia. Black Book follows Vasilisa, a nascent witch whose fiancé’s death drives her to seek a sealed demonic tome said to grant its bearer any desire. Its story draws deeply from Northern Slavic folklore, where household spirits, devils, curses, and superstitions are treated as part of everyday life rather than fantasy decoration. The mood is somber and intimate, balancing fireside village routines with infernal bargains and the human cost of wielding dark magic.

Most encounters unfold through turn-based card battles in which Vasilisa builds chains of spells, arranging attack, defense, curses, and utility cards to overcome enemies efficiently. New cards arrive through quests, discoveries, and rewards, while equipment and relic-like charms broaden the tactical options available to a developing deck. Between fights, players travel across a regional map, question locals, make dialogue choices, solve small folklore-rooted puzzles, and take on exorcisms or favors that reveal stranger sides of the countryside. A flock of bound demons also demands attention: assign them chores and they provide useful results, but leave them idle and their mischief creates problems.

What distinguishes Black Book from most deck-building RPGs is its commitment to culture and storytelling. Its hand-drawn art, restrained voice work, and dense in-game encyclopedia give every monster and custom a sense of place, while moral decisions let Vasilisa’s compassion or cruelty shape individual outcomes. Combat is approachable early on but rewards players who enjoy finding efficient spell combinations and adapting to distinct enemy behaviors.
