Eddie Riggs, a veteran roadie voiced by Jack Black, is transported to a hostile land of demon armies, chrome-plated landscapes, and monuments built from amps, guitars, and skulls. Armed with a broad axe and an enchanted guitar, he fights to free oppressed headbangers from grotesque rulers while trading jokes with a cast that includes real metal icons. Brütal Legend balances affectionate genre celebration with cartoonishly violent comedy, making its world feel equal parts heroic quest, backstage disaster, and hellish rock opera.

Most of the campaign involves driving Eddie’s customizable hot-rod, the Deuce, across a broad map packed with side missions, collectibles, races, and hidden lore. On foot, combat is a straightforward but satisfying hack-and-slash affair: axe combos handle close-range crowds, while guitar solos trigger attacks, summon vehicles, heal allies, or reshape the battlefield. As the story progresses, the focus increasingly shifts toward “Stage Battles,” hybrid real-time strategy encounters where Eddie builds units at a stage, collects resources, commands troops, and personally joins the melee. That unusual transition can feel abrupt for players expecting a pure brawler, but the campaign keeps introducing new troops, solos, and enemy factions to make its larger clashes more involved.

Its strongest feature is sheer commitment to the theme: every valley, enemy, vehicle, and structure looks as though it escaped from an airbrushed record sleeve. The licensed soundtrack draws from a huge range of metal, while cameos from Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, and Lita Ford give the adventure genuine scene credibility rather than surface-level references. Some strategy controls show their console-era roots, and the open world is more stylish than densely interactive, yet few games blend driving, action combat, and army command with such a confident personality. Fans of Psychonauts’ humor, classic metal, and experimental action games will find plenty to love, while players who demand polished RTS depth may appreciate the spectacle more than the systems.
