Danchi Days (v1.0)

A once-familiar apartment complex becomes the setting for a small but deeply personal summer adventure. Danchi Days follows sixth-grader Hoshino Kanaoka after she returns to her old Japanese hometown and finds her beloved grandmother struggling with dementia. Determined to restore some joy to her grandmother’s life, Hoshino sets out to bring back the neighborhood summer festival, one reluctant resident at a time. The result balances goofy humor, everyday childhood curiosity, and a quiet sadness rooted in memory, community, and change.

Most of the experience revolves around wandering the danchi housing complex, talking to its residents, and tracking down the items needed to restart the festival. Hoshino is joined by Moro-Q, a poetic kappa helper with his own unclear connection to the neighborhood, while forests, apartment buildings, and local hangouts hide side conversations and odd little discoveries. “Sense Games” turn mundane actions into playful minigames, asking players to use sight, sound, touch, and other unexpected forms of observation to interact with the world. An in-game web browser also becomes a key tool for learning about neighbors and uncovering more unsettling hints behind the resistance to Hoshino’s plan.

What makes Danchi Days appealing is its attention to the small details of communal life: chatty elders, isolated teenagers, exhausted adults, and the stories that remain buried between them. Rather than treating its dementia storyline as cheap drama, it frames Hoshino’s optimism against the complicated history and lingering bonds of the people around her. The adventure runs roughly eight to twelve hours, offering a focused single-player story instead of a huge open-ended sandbox. Fans of Anodyne, Even the Ocean, or offbeat narrative adventures such as Night in the Woods should find plenty to like, especially if they enjoy warm, strange games that gradually reveal a darker emotional core.
