Tokyo’s ruins become a strange coming-of-age battlefield as Hisako leaves the safety of an underground settlement to search for the school life she only knows through her grandmother’s stories. Dead Or School is a side-scrolling action RPG with an unapologetically pulpy anime tone: hordes of undead fill stations, shopping streets, and shattered city districts, while its heroine approaches disaster with fierce optimism and a homemade arsenal. The contrast between a bleak zombie apocalypse and her cheerful dream of classrooms, friends, and youth gives the adventure an identity beyond simple monster slaughter. It is messy, energetic, and often deliberately absurd, with giant weapons and school-themed ambitions colliding in every level.

Combat revolves around pushing through dense packs of enemies with melee weapons, firearms, and special attacks, then carrying the loot back to base for upgrades. Hisako gains levels and abilities as she fights, while equipment drops provide the parts needed to improve statistics, dismantle unwanted gear, and assemble stronger weapons tailored to a preferred playstyle. Mixing components can produce wild builds, whether that means a heavy close-range bruiser, a gun-focused zombie hunter, or a more balanced fighter able to handle crowds and tougher elite threats. Stages reward repeated runs and careful scavenging, and the amount of incoming damage visibly affects Hisako’s condition, adding some tension to prolonged expeditions even when her determined personality never cracks.

Its strongest feature is the depth hidden beneath the simple left-to-right structure. Dead Or School combines the loot chase and incremental character building of an action RPG with the immediate rhythm of an arcade brawler, then wraps it in colorful anime art and gleefully over-the-top weapon design. The underground-to-surface journey also gives each new area a sense of progress, as familiar Japanese locations become hostile scavenging grounds packed with bosses and secrets. Players who enjoy Odin Sphere, Dragon’s Crown, or loot-heavy zombie action will find plenty to chase here, though newcomers should expect some grind and repetition before the crafting system fully opens up.
