Every region feels hostile but worth probing, from crumbling keeps to surreal caverns, with strange survivors and fragments of lore giving the world more personality than its bleak premise suggests. The tone is tragic and oppressive, yet its occasional odd humor keeps the journey from becoming relentlessly dour.

Combat revolves around measured attacks, dodges, blocks, stamina management, and learning exactly when an enemy leaves an opening. Seven starting classes, multiclass options, a deep talent system, and weapon categories ranging from bows and scythes to halberds and swords let players build around agility, magic, ranged pressure, or hard-hitting melee. Movement upgrades gradually open shortcuts and previously unreachable routes, making exploration feel closer to a Metroidvania than a simple linear boss rush. Materials gathered from enemies and the environment feed into crafting, while crucial decisions and optional objectives shape which ending Sorun receives.

Boss battles provide the main attraction: large, memorable encounters demand pattern recognition rather than button mashing, and defeated foes can return in Heroic mode with nastier moves and far less room for error. Afterlife substantially expands the original release with extra areas, bosses, weapons, reworked systems, and a more complete sense of adventure, so it is the version worth playing. New Game+ also lets veterans tune difficulty through escalating challenge brackets, enemy variations, and modifiers, giving successful runs real replay value. Fans of Hollow Knight, Blasphemous, and Salt and Sanctuary who want a more deliberate, build-focused 2D challenge should feel at home, though newcomers should expect a steep learning curve and occasional punishing setbacks.
