Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless (v1.12 & ALL DLC)

Feudal-Japanese imagery gets a loud, irreverent demonic makeover in Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless, a strategy RPG built around ridiculous power scaling and sharp comedy. Its many Netherworlds form Hinomoto, a place where traditional bushido has been replaced by a ruthless culture of destruction, and every faction has its own bizarre take on honor. The story follows the apathetic warrior Fuji and wealthy bushido enthusiast Pirilika, whose protection deal pulls them into a conflict with more strings attached than either initially admits. Although the plot stays playful and exaggerated, its colorful cast and constant satire give the journey plenty of personality.

Battles play out on compact grid maps where positioning, elevation, character facing, elemental effects, and team combos all matter. Players recruit monsters and humanoid units, choose from more than forty classes, then level, equip, reincarnate, and customize them into increasingly specialized roles. The series’ signature lift-and-throw tactics return, while Jumbification lets a unit become a map-dominating giant and Hell Mode grants select characters powerful transformation-based abilities. Item Reincarnation adds another long-term layer by allowing gear found in the Item World to be reshaped and improved, while cleared stages can be automated for players who enjoy grinding without repeating every battle manually.

What separates Disgaea 7 from most tactical RPGs is how enthusiastically it embraces excess: ordinary recruits can eventually deal absurd damage, weapons become personal projects, and optional postgame challenges ask for serious system mastery. Its bright anime presentation and joke-heavy writing keep the mood far lighter than the dense numbers might suggest, even when the mechanics become demanding. Online ranked battles offer a reason to test carefully built squads against other players, though the real draw remains the enormous solo progression loop. Fans of Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem who want deeper grinding, crazier builds, and less restraint find plenty to love, while newcomers should expect a generous but information-heavy introduction.
