Capcom’s two Dungeons & Dragons arcade brawlers still deliver a lively mix of side-scrolling action, tabletop flavor, and coin-op chaos. Chronicles of Mystara packages Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara, sending a band of adventurers through monster-filled forests, ruined strongholds, caverns, and dragon lairs. The tone is colorful and pulpy rather than grim, with oversized fantasy creatures, expressive sprite work, and the satisfying clatter of an arcade cabinet translated to PC. Although the games are rooted in simple left-to-right progression, their branching routes and class-specific choices give each campaign more personality than the average belt-scroller.

Players choose from familiar fantasy roles including fighters, clerics, elves, dwarves, thieves, and magic-users, then carve through kobolds, trolls, undead, and bosses with weapons, spells, bows, and consumable items. Combat rewards smart positioning: melee characters block and juggle foes up close, while spellcasters manage limited magic and fragile defenses, and everyone benefits from using oil, arrows, rings, and healing supplies at the right moment. Characters gain levels during a run, improving their effectiveness while equipment durability and inventory management add a modest RPG layer to the action. Local-style arcade play is best with friends, while GGPO-powered online co-op supports four players and allows people to join or leave an active session.

What separates this collection from many retro compilations is how much flexibility surrounds the original games. House Rules can remove equipment breakage, flood stages with gold, or turn the campaign into a score-focused race against the clock, while challenges and Vault unlocks provide goals beyond simply reaching the ending. Shadow over Mystara in particular remains a remarkably deep arcade brawler, full of alternate paths, secret encounters, class synergies, and enough enemy variety to keep repeat sessions engaging. Fans of Golden Axe, The King of Dragons, or classic D&D adventures should find plenty to enjoy, and newcomers can start with easier settings before tackling the more demanding higher-difficulty runs.
