Exploration unfolds across grid-based maps packed with hostile ruins, city districts, wilderness routes, dialogue choices, loot, traps, and quest-driven encounters. Combat is turn-based and tactical, with positioning, melee weapons, missiles, spells, and psionic powers all mattering when enemies surround a vulnerable character. Shattered Lands is especially respected for its flexible character creation, tactical battles, and strong sense of leading a growing resistance, while Wake of the Ravager delivers a more directed sequel with bigger stakes.
