Warfare uses strategic army movement and automated battle resolution, though owners of Field of Glory II can export clashes into that separate tactical wargame for detailed turn-based battles. Expansion raises your Legacy, but overextension also creates Decadence, a central mechanic that forces you to balance conquest against stability, public order, and the cost of maintaining an empire.

Its best idea is that decline is not merely a failure state; weakening states can fracture, reform, or give way to new political entities, making the ancient world feel unusually alive. The clean map interface and dense menus demand attention, but the systems reward players who enjoy reading tooltips, planning several turns ahead, and adapting to unexpected crises. Randomized starts, a large roster of factions, and differing cultural paths give campaigns considerable replay value even without a focus on scripted narrative.
