A frozen northern frontier turns every expedition into a fight for survival, where brutal monsters, scarce resources, and bad positioning can end a mission fast. Frosthaven adapts Isaac Childres’ acclaimed tabletop campaign into a demanding digital tactical RPG with a grim fantasy mood and a strong emphasis on planning over reflexes. It follows in the footsteps of Gloomhaven, but the new setting, classes, and settlement-management layer give the adventure its own identity. The tone is harsh but rewarding: victories feel earned because the game rarely lets a careless party coast through an encounter.

Combat unfolds on tactical maps where each character selects two ability cards per round, balancing initiative, movement, attacks, support skills, and the long-term cost of exhausting valuable options. Parties begin with six distinctive classes, including the aggressive Drifter, summon-focused Boneshaper, fast Blinkblade, and unusual dual-form Geminate, while further mercenaries become available during the campaign. Enemy behavior, terrain, scenario goals, and limited card endurance force players to consider every turn rather than simply chasing damage numbers. The full campaign works solo with control over a party or in online co-op, where coordination becomes especially important when setting up combos and preventing allies from being overwhelmed.

The Outpost separates Frosthaven from many digital dungeon crawlers, giving successful missions a practical purpose as resources fund buildings, upgrades, and additional systems. Its interface and adjustable difficulty options make the famously dense ruleset more approachable than a physical tabletop session, although the strategic depth still rewards patience and repeated experimentation. Fans of Gloomhaven, XCOM, or Baldur’s Gate-style turn-based battles should find plenty to enjoy in its punishing encounters and party-building possibilities. Newcomers can learn at a gentler pace, but tactical RPG veterans who enjoy calculating risks several turns ahead are the audience most likely to get the best from it.
