Gibbous – A Cthulhu Adventure follows librarian Buzz Kerwan after he finds the Necronomicon and accidentally gives his cat, Kitteh, the unwelcome gift of speech. Meanwhile, hard-boiled detective Don R. Ketype hunts the same dangerous book through a city overrun by bizarre cults and ancient secrets. The result is a richly illustrated point-and-click adventure that balances eldritch dread with cynical jokes, absurd characters, and a self-aware affection for the genre’s pulpy roots.

Players investigate hand-painted locations, speak with an enormous cast of eccentrics, gather inventory objects, and solve the kind of logic-defying puzzles classic adventure fans expect. Control shifts between Buzz, Don, and Kitteh as the story expands from Darkham to locations inspired by Transylvania and beyond, with each protagonist bringing a different angle to the central conspiracy. Conversations and environmental clues carry much of the experience, while puzzles ask players to examine scenes carefully and make smart use of collected items rather than relying on reflexes. Full voice acting gives the lengthy narrative real character, and the game’s traditional animation keeps even its strangest monsters expressive and readable.

Its greatest strength lies in the contrast between lavish, Disney-like 2D visuals and material full of forbidden tomes, voodoo, cultists, and incomprehensible beings. Rather than merely spoofing Lovecraft, it builds a genuine mystery around his familiar ideas while letting Kitteh’s relentless sarcasm puncture the gloom at every opportunity. The world feels lovingly made, particularly in its Transylvanian architecture, regional flavor, and memorable voice performances. Fans of Monkey Island, Broken Sword, or modern retro adventures such as Thimbleweed Park will find a substantial, funny, story-driven puzzle game here, while newcomers should be ready for a deliberately old-school pace and occasional challenging inventory conundrums.
