Oxford’s misty streets and a decaying manor provide the backdrop for a paranormal mystery where scientific research may be brushing against the impossible. Samantha Everett, an American street magician stranded in England, takes a job as assistant to the withdrawn neurobiologist Dr. David Styles and quickly becomes involved in his strange university experiments. When supposedly harmless tests produce increasingly disturbing results, the story turns into a gothic investigation of grief, perception, identity, and the frightening potential of the human mind. Gray Matter carries the deliberate, character-led mood of a classic mystery novel, balancing dry humor from Sam with a steadily darker supernatural undercurrent.

Play alternates between Samantha and Dr. Styles across eight chapters, giving the investigation two sharply different perspectives. Most of the adventure follows traditional point-and-click design: searching detailed locations, collecting and combining inventory objects, questioning suspects, reading documents, and solving environmental puzzles. Samantha’s background as a magician is more than flavor, as several challenges ask her to use misdirection, sleight of hand, and practical trickery to get past obstacles or extract information. The pace favors observation and deduction over reflexes, though some puzzles follow old-school adventure-game logic and reward players who carefully examine every scene and conversation.

Jane Jensen’s writing is the major draw, delivering the same interest in damaged protagonists and occult ambiguity that made Gabriel Knight memorable. Rather than treating science and the supernatural as simple opposites, the plot keeps asking whether the bizarre events stem from experimental psychology, genuine otherworldly forces, or something in between. Its painted backdrops, Oxford setting, and melancholy mansion atmosphere remain evocative, even if the character models and interface show their age. Fans of Gabriel Knight, The Black Mirror, and story-first detective adventures should feel at home, while newcomers who can accept a slower pace and occasional challenging puzzle will find an absorbing, unusually thoughtful mystery.
