A distant colony planet becomes the stage for a tightly paced sci-fi escape story, where one courier’s routine job unravels into a conspiracy involving authoritarian control, alien history, and his own identity. LUNARK revives the cinematic 2D platformer tradition associated with Flashback and Another World, pairing deliberate movement with richly animated pixel-art scenes. Leo moves through oppressive city districts, hazardous underground passages, strange ruins, and hostile wilderness while the mood shifts between lonely exploration, sudden danger, and pulpy space-opera drama. Its retro inspiration is obvious, but the presentation feels polished rather than merely nostalgic.

Moment-to-moment play centers on careful traversal and survival. Leo runs, leaps across gaps, clings to ledges, climbs, rolls under threats, and uses a blaster to deal with security droids and other dangers, with timing and positioning mattering more than frantic button-mashing. Environmental puzzles, deadly traps, switches, keys, and conversations break up the action, while hidden upgrades improve health and weapon capacity for players willing to inspect each area closely. Progress follows a largely directed adventure route rather than an open-ended map, which keeps the story moving but also means failure can send you back to checkpoints when platforming or combat goes wrong. The controls are approachable, although the intentionally weighty animation-based movement asks for patience and precision.

What stands out most is how faithfully LUNARK captures the feel of early ’90s cinematic adventures without sacrificing visual clarity or modern convenience. Detailed backgrounds, expressive character animation, and rotoscoped story scenes give every location a handcrafted identity, from neon industrial spaces to unsettling alien landscapes. Narrative choices and a memorable supporting cast add personality to an otherwise focused single-player journey, and small details—including the ability to pet animals—keep the grim setting from becoming relentlessly bleak. Fans of Flashback, Out of This World, and Blackthorne should feel immediately at home, while newcomers who enjoy story-led platformers and can tolerate a demanding, old-school cadence will find a compact, atmospheric adventure worth seeing through.
