Hold Out

Dark corridors, boarded windows, and the scrape of undead feet define a survival shooter built around keeping a fragile refuge intact. Set across abandoned houses, lonely woodland, poisoned farmland, and deserted urban backstreets, Hold Out casts players as survivors facing a world that has already fallen apart. Its horror comes less from elaborate story twists than from mounting pressure: every quiet moment is time to gather supplies before the next mass of bodies reaches the barricades. The tone stays grim, grounded, and tense, with survival depending on whether the group can keep its nerve when defenses start failing.

Matches revolve around searching dangerous areas for useful equipment, choosing weapons, and reinforcing positions before the undead arrive. Players board windows and prepare defensive points, then fight to stop hordes from forcing their way inside; the simple objective becomes increasingly stressful as resources and safe space disappear. Up to four players can work together, allowing squads to cover entrances, scavenge in pairs, and support anyone overwhelmed by the rush, while solo players face the same threats with far less room for error. Ten firearms provide different approaches to the action, so close-range crowd control, careful rifle fire, or more flexible all-purpose weaponry can suit different survival roles.

The enemy mix gives the combat its most important wrinkle, combining slow shambling zombies with faster infected that punish complacency and make static defense unreliable. Rather than treating every encounter as a shooting-gallery wave, the game asks players to balance exploration, preparation, ammunition use, and positioning under constant threat. Its environments support that survival-horror rhythm well, moving from claustrophobic interiors to exposed outdoor spaces where danger can arrive from several directions. Hold Out suits co-op groups looking for a lean, difficult zombie defense game in the vein of classic horde modes, while players who prefer relaxed exploration or heavily narrative campaigns may find its relentless pressure less appealing.
