Hylics

A fever-dream RPG built from clay figures, scanned textures, and aggressively strange humor, Hylics feels unlike almost anything else in the genre. You control Wayne, a bald wanderer crossing a bizarre low-poly world in pursuit of the tyrannical Gibby, though the plot matters less than the unsettling sights encountered along the route. Conversations spill into absurd, semi-randomized language, monsters look like sculptures brought to life, and every screen carries the rough handmade character of an outsider-art animation. The mood is playful and surreal rather than traditionally grim, but its weirdness can be genuinely disorienting.

Most of the adventure revolves around first-person exploration, talking to odd residents, finding key items, and pushing through compact dungeons. Battles use familiar turn-based JRPG rules, with a party of strange allies selecting attacks, defensive actions, and special techniques against equally strange enemies. Progress comes from gaining new party members, unlocking useful moves, collecting resources, and learning how the world’s small maze-like regions connect. Hylics does not demand the long-term optimization of a major Final Fantasy or Shin Megami Tensei entry; its roughly two-hour campaign is more interested in delivering a concentrated sequence of surprises. Random encounters and some opaque objectives add old-school friction, though the game’s short length prevents them from becoming exhausting.

What separates Hylics from other indie RPGs is its uncompromising audiovisual identity. Mason Lindroth’s claymation-inspired character models, warped digital backdrops, and dissonant electronic soundtrack create a cohesive nightmare-cartoon atmosphere that remains memorable long after the credits. Its writing often reads like generated nonsense, yet that deliberate lack of conventional logic becomes part of the joke and the mystery. Fans of offbeat games such as Yume Nikki, Space Funeral, or EarthBound’s stranger moments find plenty to appreciate, while players seeking clear storytelling or polished combat depth may bounce off quickly. It suits curious veterans of experimental indie games best, but newcomers can enjoy it as a short, bizarre introduction to RPGs that refuse to behave normally.
