Islands of the Caliph draws on Arab, Persian, and African folklore rather than the usual European fantasy playbook, filling its lands with jinn, ghouls, giant scorpions, spiders, and other legendary threats. Its mood is adventurous but often uneasy, with spiritual questions and moral consequences sitting alongside sword fights and dungeon delving. The presentation embraces the limitations and tactile character of 1980s computer RPGs, including a keyboard-only control scheme that immediately signals its intended audience.

Movement follows a tile-by-tile grid, but battles play out in real time, creating a hybrid rhythm that asks for careful positioning as well as quick reactions. Players roam freely, uncover settlements and remote locations, take on quests, and gradually piece together the larger conflict instead of being marched through a rigid campaign. Blades range from broadly familiar weapons to regional arms such as scimitars, shamshirs, and jambiyahs, giving combat a fitting cultural flavor. Automatic mapping reduces the pain of getting lost: a compact minimap tracks nearby ground, while expanded local and world maps help chart routes and locate objectives.

Open-ended progression is the defining attraction, because major goals are discovered through curiosity rather than handed over with constant markers. Decisions can shape a character’s path toward spiritual advancement, personal ruin, or consequences that reach across the islands, lending exploration more weight than simple loot hunting. Its stark retro visuals, grid navigation, and intentionally constrained interface will feel closer to Might & Magic, Questron, and Alternate Reality than to streamlined modern RPGs. Patient veterans who enjoy mapping, experimentation, and lore-rich worlds should find plenty to savor, while newcomers are best suited to it if they welcome an uncompromising throwback instead of modern convenience.
