A ruined world hangs beneath the Tower of Babel, and the only route toward salvation is straight through its divine occupiers. Kernel Hearts combines fast, combo-driven action RPG combat with roguelike runs, casting players as members of the M.A.H.O.U. Unit: fighters built to challenge angels, climb an impossible tower, and overthrow the force responsible for humanity’s collapse. Its mood is equal parts apocalyptic and stylishly absurd, with magical-girl transformation power set against biblical horrors and the ashes of civilization. Rather than treating heaven as a place of refuge, the game makes it a hostile vertical battlefield full of strange residents and brutal guardians.

Every ascent revolves around clearing enemy-filled floors, choosing powers, and assembling a build that changes from run to run. Attacks, spells, mobility options, and special effects can be mixed into aggressive combinations, encouraging players to experiment with positioning and timing instead of relying on one reliable weapon. Floors lead to major boss encounters, where each area’s guardian tests how well a team understands its current abilities and works together under pressure. Up to four players can tackle the tower cooperatively, punching through supernatural enemies as a coordinated squad, while solo players still have room to develop their own preferred combat rhythm.

Failure is part of the structure rather than a hard stop, since expeditions return the M.A.H.O.U. Unit to a backup point in a laboratory near humanity’s final refuge. Rewards earned during runs feed into a chip-based customization system, allowing players to unlock and equip a sizable 256KB loadout for persistent build tuning between attempts. The standout mechanic is the temporary magical-girl form, which removes the Heavenly Curse and turns nearby foes into targets for a powerful transformation attack. Conversations and gifts for the tower’s inhabitants add a lighter relationship-building thread to the violence. Players who enjoy Hades-style repeatable progression, co-op action, and eccentric anime-infused fantasy should find plenty to like, especially if they prefer experimentation over fixed character classes.
