Harkyn chooses from warrior, cleric, and rogue foundations, then develops through equipped weapons, armor weight, spells, and an experience system that rewards pushing farther from the last checkpoint. Death drops accumulated experience, while banking it lets you level up and strengthen the magical gauntlet used for ranged attacks and utility powers. Exploration is deliberately compact but rewarding, as side paths hide gear, shortcuts, lore, and opponents whose attack patterns demand patience.

Unlike faster Souls-likes, Lords of the Fallen emphasizes the physical heft of oversized shields, hammers, and armor, making its duels feel slower and more deliberate. Its checkpoint system adds an interesting risk-versus-reward wrinkle: saving often restores enemies, but carrying unspent experience increases its multiplier, tempting skilled players to press onward. Bosses are not always as memorable or intricate as FromSoftware’s best work, and the original release can feel rough around the edges, but its shorter runtime makes it approachable.
