Game Overview

E.D.N. III remains a frozen death trap where whiteout storms, hostile wildlife, and corporate ambition collide. Lost Planet 3 shifts the series toward a more personal, story-driven science-fiction adventure, following rig pilot Jim Peyton as he takes a dangerous NEVEC contract to support his family back on Earth. What begins as routine thermal-energy surveying steadily uncovers buried secrets about the planet’s colonization and the people exploiting it. The mood is less arcade-chaotic than earlier entries, balancing blue-collar space drama with sudden encounters against enormous insectoid Akrid.

Combat alternates between third-person shooting on foot and operating Jim’s hulking Utility Rig, a working mech that feels more like industrial equipment than a superhero suit. On foot, Jim uses conventional firearms, grenades, and cover to handle pirates and smaller creatures, while the rig brings drills, claws, shields, and heavy firepower to boss-sized threats. Missions send players across connected ice fields, abandoned facilities, caves, and research sites, often returning to Coronis base to upgrade equipment, accept optional assignments, or investigate new leads. Thermal energy functions as a constant resource and series hallmark, while the rig also handles practical tasks such as drilling, lifting, and navigating hazardous terrain.

Its strongest feature is the contrast between intimate human storytelling and oversized monster battles, giving the campaign a different identity from the more aggressively action-focused earlier games. E.D.N. III feels lived in through radio conversations, corporate propaganda, battered machinery, and environments that suggest a colony already struggling to survive. Included DLC expands the package with additional multiplayer maps, character options, and cosmetic content, though the main attraction remains the single-player campaign. Fans of Dead Space, Mass Effect’s frontier-colony atmosphere, or mech-heavy shooters with a slower, narrative-led pace should find plenty to enjoy, while veterans should expect a more grounded prequel rather than a direct repeat of Lost Planet 2’s co-op spectacle.
