Soviet Marines fight through the brutal Black Sea campaigns of World War II in a real-time tactics campaign built around hard-won ground and costly victories. Men of War: Red Tide trades grand strategic map-painting for tense, mission-based battles where a handful of well-used soldiers, guns, and vehicles can turn a desperate landing into a breakthrough. The tone is harsh and military-focused, following the “Black Coats,” a feared naval infantry force thrown into assaults on fortified beaches, ruined cities, and contested coastal strongholds. Historical locations including Odessa, Sevastopol, and Theodosia give the campaign a strong sense of place without pretending war is clean or predictable.

Players command infantry squads, armor, artillery, landing craft, and even armored trains from the familiar top-down tactical view, issuing positioning, attack, and support orders in real time. Direct Control mode lets you take over an individual soldier or vehicle yourself, aiming weapons, driving tanks, and making crucial shots when AI control is not precise enough. Missions demand more than simply eliminating every enemy: capturing guns, securing objectives, managing scarce ammunition, repairing damaged equipment, and using terrain intelligently are often essential. Captured enemy weapons can become lifesavers, while air strikes, naval guns, bombers, fighters, and warships provide devastating support when timed well.

Red Tide stands out through its coastal warfare focus and the variety of military hardware it places under your command, from marine assault groups to self-propelled guns and naval fire-support vessels. The campaign’s more than 20 scenarios are usually demanding, rewarding patient scouting, clever flanking, and a willingness to adapt after plans collapse under artillery fire. Its interface and old-school difficulty can feel unforgiving, especially for players accustomed to streamlined modern RTS games, but that friction is part of its tactical depth.
