NightCry

A luxury ocean liner becomes a locked-room nightmare when a brutal murder shatters an otherwise elegant evening at sea. NightCry is a deliberately old-school survival-horror adventure built around creeping dread, suspicious passengers, and the awful knowledge that nowhere on the ship is truly safe. Its polished lounges, narrow cabins, medical rooms, and shadowy service corridors turn from glamorous spaces into hunting grounds as a supernatural killer begins stalking the survivors. The mood is tense rather than action-heavy, drawing much of its fear from isolation, sudden pursuit, and the uncertainty of who—or what—is responsible.

Players guide protagonist Monica through the ship in 3D point-and-click fashion, examining scenery, collecting clues, speaking to characters, and working through environmental puzzles. Careful observation matters because important items and story details can hide in ordinary-looking rooms, while decisions and discoveries steer the narrative toward different outcomes. The Scissorwalker, a towering creature armed with enormous blades, interrupts investigation with chase sequences that demand quick choices: flee through available routes, duck into hiding places, or keep quiet long enough to avoid detection. There is no combat safety net, so surviving depends on reading the environment and reacting under pressure rather than overpowering the threat.

NightCry stands out as a modern revival of the Clock Tower style of horror, with series creator Hifumi Kono bringing back the vulnerable-protagonist structure and panic-driven escape design. Its presentation is uneven in places, but that roughness can suit players who enjoy cult Japanese horror, B-movie melodrama, and adventure games more than slick cinematic scares. Multiple endings, character perspectives, hidden story threads, and branching choices give repeat playthroughs a purpose, especially for anyone determined to uncover the liner’s full history. Fans of Clock Tower, D, or Fatal Frame’s slower investigative side are the natural audience, while newcomers should come prepared for deliberate pacing, puzzle experimentation, and frequent moments of helpless pursuit.
