Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition (v3.1.4.0)

An immortal amnesiac wakes on a mortuary slab, covered in the scars of lives he cannot recall, and immediately finds himself entangled in one of PC gaming’s most literary RPGs. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition trades conventional heroic fantasy for Sigil, a filthy, impossible metropolis at the center of the multiverse where portals open only with the right symbolic key. Its tone is mournful, strange, funny, and often deeply philosophical, following the Nameless One as past incarnations leave consequences for him to confront. Demons, angels, talking objects, undead intellectuals, and a wisecracking floating skull all feel natural in this wonderfully off-kilter Dungeons & Dragons setting.

Most of the adventure revolves around reading, questioning, persuading, investigating, and choosing how the Nameless One responds to people and problems. Dialogue checks frequently offer more satisfying solutions than violence, while wisdom, intelligence, charisma, memories, and prior decisions unlock new paths through quests. Combat uses the classic real-time-with-pause Infinity Engine format: pause to issue commands to a party of unusual companions, then manage spells, weapons, positioning, and healing against hostile creatures. Character development remains flexible, allowing the protagonist to move between fighter, mage, and thief roles, shift alignment through conduct, and gain abilities shaped by the story.

What separates it from Baldur’s Gate-style contemporaries is its fixation on identity, mortality, regret, and the unsettling idea that belief can alter reality. Sigil and the Outer Planes reward careful exploration, but the game’s real strength is writing that makes even minor conversations feel unpredictable and consequential. The Enhanced Edition keeps the original’s dense, text-heavy design intact while adding a high-resolution interface, zoom, loot conveniences, improved journal and combat tools, bug fixes, and remastered music; purists can disable many additions. Players who want tactical combat above all else may find its pacing dated, but anyone who values Disco Elysium-like dialogue, imaginative worldbuilding, and choice-driven role-playing should consider it essential.
