Ancient Karnak becomes a hostile, maze-like battleground where a lone special-operations soldier confronts an extraterrestrial invasion steeped in Egyptian mythology. PowerSlave Exhumed is a remastered version of the cult 1990s console FPS, combining content and ideas from the original Saturn and PlayStation releases into one cohesive campaign. Its atmosphere is strange and oppressive rather than outright horror-focused, mixing tombs, flooded ruins, temples, and alien machinery beneath an ominous desert sky. Expect a fast, old-school shooter with a surprising taste for backtracking and environmental discovery.

Gunfights revolve around a steadily expanding arsenal that includes pistols, machine guns, flamethrowers, grenades, and more exotic Egyptian-themed tools of destruction. Levels are not simply cleared and forgotten: powerful artifacts grant abilities such as swimming, flying, surviving lava, and accessing previously unreachable routes, turning the structure into a proto-Metroidvania long before that label became common in shooters. Finding prisoners, keys, upgrades, and secret paths feeds into the progression loop, while enemies range from armed invaders to grotesque creatures that demand constant movement and careful ammunition use. The KEX Engine restoration improves compatibility and presentation on modern PCs while preserving the brisk movement, chunky visuals, and demanding combat of the original.

What separates PowerSlave Exhumed from many retro FPS revivals is its sense of place and progression; Karnak feels like an interconnected archaeological nightmare rather than a sequence of isolated shooting galleries. Its mix of frantic Doom-like combat and ability-gated exploration makes it more deliberate than a standard corridor shooter, even when the action becomes chaotic. The visual style remains unmistakably mid-’90s, but the remaster’s smoother performance and combined campaign make it the definitive way to play. Fans of classic shooters, Turok-style exploration, and games such as Metroid will find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers should be ready for limited guidance and proudly old-fashioned challenge.
