Retro Classix: Joe & Mac – Caveman Ninja (v1.01)

A loud, colorful rescue mission powers this arcade action throwback, sending two club-wielding cavemen across a dinosaur-packed prehistoric wilderness. Joe and Mac set out to recover their kidnapped girlfriends from hostile Neanderthals, but the journey is less about storytelling than surviving a constant barrage of enemies, traps, and absurd set pieces. Lava fields, collapsing terrain, charging beasts, and oversized bosses give every stage a playful Saturday-morning-cartoon energy. The tone is goofy rather than grim, yet the old-school challenge is very real.

Players run, jump, and attack through compact side-scrolling stages, using stone axes, clubs, boomerangs, wheels, and other primitive-looking projectiles to clear the path. Enemies arrive from both sides and often crowd the screen, so success depends on quick reactions, careful jumps, and learning where threats spawn. Food pickups restore health, while weapon upgrades increase your offensive power and make the more chaotic encounters manageable. Local two-player co-op is the main attraction: a second player can join the mayhem as the other caveman, although at least one controller is required for the feature.

Its biggest strength is the unmistakable coin-op feel, from the large sprites and exaggerated dinosaur designs to the brisk, no-nonsense stage structure. The Retro Classix release also lets players choose between clean original visuals and a CRT-style presentation that better mimics an arcade cabinet. Expect a relatively short campaign built for repeated runs rather than a long-form adventure, with difficulty that can turn unforgiving once lives disappear. Fans of Contra, Toki, or other demanding 16-bit-era arcade platformers will find a cheerful, co-op-friendly relic here, while newcomers should come prepared for limited forgiveness and plenty of prehistoric chaos.
