A lone astronaut wakes amid the ruins of an alien planet that refuses to let her die for good. Returnal blends a cinematic third-person shooter with roguelike structure and dense bullet-hell pressure, placing Selene in a hostile loop where every death sends her back to the beginning. Atropos feels cold, strange, and genuinely oppressive, with abandoned extraterrestrial architecture, shifting forests, and fragments of Selene’s past turning survival into an unsettling mystery. The tone is demanding and melancholic rather than merely chaotic, rewarding players who can stay calm while the screen fills with glowing projectiles.

Combat revolves around constant movement: Selene sprints, dashes through attacks, grapples across arenas, and fires a growing arsenal of alien weapons without stopping to reload. Each run reshuffles room layouts, upgrades, parasites, artifacts, weapon traits, and risks, so success comes from adapting to whatever build the planet offers rather than relying on one safe loadout. Permanent progression gradually opens useful tools and makes later attempts more manageable, but boss fights and biome transitions still demand sharp timing, spatial awareness, and a willingness to learn from failure. The PC edition includes Suspend Cycle for pausing a run safely, co-op support for tackling the campaign with another player, and the Tower of Sisyphus, an arcade-style endless challenge built around score chasing and rapid combat.

Few roguelikes deliver this level of audiovisual impact during play; haptic-style intensity is translated into sharp effects, pounding sound design, and spectacular particle-heavy battles that remain readable once the rhythm clicks. Its mix of Housemarque’s arcade shooter heritage, Metroid-like traversal upgrades, and a cryptic sci-fi narrative gives it a personality beyond the usual randomized-run formula. PC-specific graphics presets, performance metrics, achievements, photo mode, and scalable visual options make it easier to tailor the experience to a range of systems. Fans of Hades, Risk of Rain 2, or challenging action games like Doom Eternal should find plenty to love, though newcomers should expect a steep early learning curve rather than an easy power fantasy.
