Risk of Rain Returns rebuilds the original roguelike with sharper pixel art, reworked stages, expanded character options, and a much smoother way to play with friends. Its mood is tense but playful: one minute you are carefully picking through an alien ruin, and the next you are melting a screen-full of monsters with a ridiculous chain of item effects. Death sends you back to the start, but each attempt reveals more tools, routes, and survivors to master.

Runs revolve around locating a teleporter, activating it, surviving the escalating swarm and boss encounter, then choosing whether to rush onward or search the level for chests, drones, equipment, and upgrades. Every item can radically change a build, from extra jumps and critical hits to missiles, lightning, healing, and chaotic on-hit effects that turn basic attacks into spectacle. The clock constantly raises the difficulty, forcing meaningful risk-versus-reward decisions instead of allowing comfortable grinding. Fifteen survivors offer distinct approaches, including sturdy frontline fighters, agile ranged damage dealers, poison-focused monsters, and the Drifter, who collects scrap from defeated enemies to create temporary items for the team or fuel destructive attacks.

What makes this version more than a visual refresh is how thoroughly it supports experimentation. New survivors, alternate abilities, secrets, revised multiplayer, and more than ten Artifacts let players reshape runs with modifiers that can make them easier, stranger, or brutally harder. Online and local co-op for up to four players suits coordinated groups, although solo runs remain excellent for learning each character’s movement, cooldowns, and item priorities. Fans of Dead Cells, Spelunky, or the faster roguelike side of Hades will appreciate its demanding repetition and build variety, while veterans of the original gain a respectful remake that feels meaningfully expanded rather than merely polished.
