A sun-bleached Indian Ocean replaces the usual Caribbean backdrop in this scrappy pirate action RPG, where cursed islands, undead sailors, and the mystery of the Drunken God fuel a deliberately rowdy campaign. Rum & Gun pairs the quick reflexes of a top-down shooter with the compulsive loot chase of a dungeon crawler, all wrapped in chunky low-poly visuals that recall late-1990s PC adventures. Its tone is gleefully ridiculous rather than grim: one minute you are blasting raiders apart, the next you are drinking rum for a combat boost or playing a fiddle beside a freshly halved zombie. The story spans four acts of authored levels, although the final act remains unfinished according to the game’s current development status.

Combat centers on keyboard movement and mouse aiming, demanding that players circle enemies, line up shots, and manage reloads under pressure through an active-reload timing system. Guns drive the action, but melee-focused and spell-oriented builds remain practical alternatives, especially once perks, equipment, and weapon runes begin reshaping attacks. Loot includes a broad selection of firearms, hats, pets, and other pirate gear, while two runes can be slotted into each weapon to add upgradeable effects and make familiar tools behave very differently. Between land battles, players can engage in ship fights, play Liar’s Dice, raise morale with instruments, and pursue legendary creatures by working out their associated mysteries. Controller support is no longer available, so it is firmly designed around mouse-and-keyboard play.

What stands out is how many pirate fantasies it throws into one compact ARPG framework without losing its arcade-like pace. Arena battles and endlessly generated Treasure Hunt maps give the game a life beyond the campaign, while LAN co-op supports large local-network crews rather than limiting parties to a conventional four-player setup. An included map editor and Workshop sharing also suit players who want to build their own chaotic island encounters. Fans of Torchlight-style loot builds who enjoy the aiming pressure of twin-stick shooters should find plenty to like, especially if they appreciate rough-edged, single-developer ambition over blockbuster polish.
