Scathe

Hell is less a place to conquer than a lethal obstacle course in this frantic first-person shooter. Scathe casts you as a divine-made enforcer attempting to break out of an infernal labyrinth by recovering powerful Hellstones and killing the Guardians that protect them. Its tone sits somewhere between old-school arena shooting and a punishing bullet-hell arcade game: demons pour in from every angle, while patterned waves of projectiles turn even a quiet corridor into a precision-dodging challenge.

Fast movement is as important as firepower. You sprint, strafe, leap through gaps, and slip between dense curtains of enemy shots while blasting grotesque creatures with an arsenal built around aggressive secondary attacks. Weapons such as the incendiary Hot Hatch and close-range Bow Blade encourage different approaches, while runes, hidden routes, secrets, and branching zones give the maze more purpose than simply reaching the next combat room. Checkpoints offer some relief, but survival demands awareness and clean movement; one careless collision with a trap, pit, or projectile can quickly end a run. Online co-op also lets up to four players tackle the campaign together, though the shared-life setup keeps the pressure on even when friends are present.

What makes Scathe memorable is its fusion of Doom-like weapon handling with the spatial discipline of a shmup. Levels are designed as interconnected combat gauntlets rather than open worlds, giving players choices over their route while constantly testing their ability to read threats at high speed. The visual style leans into scorched metal, flesh, lava, and oversized monsters, but the real appeal is mechanical: every arena becomes a test of positioning, timing, and nerve. Fans of DOOM, Serious Sam, and bullet-heavy games such as Enter the Gungeon should find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers should expect a demanding shooter that rewards persistence more than cautious play.
