Astoria’s fate rests on Yuma Ilvern, a shy young man whose body contains the soul and overwhelming force of the legendary Shining Dragon. Shining Resonance Refrain is a colorful action JRPG built around a familiar but enjoyable anime-fantasy conflict: an expansionist empire hunts dragon power, while a small band of heroes fights to keep its homeland free. The tone balances earnest drama, party banter, romance, and broad fantasy adventure rather than leaning into grim political warfare. Yuma’s struggle to accept his own strength gives the story a more personal angle than its standard save-the-kingdom setup initially suggests.

Combat unfolds in real time, with a four-person party that lets players control Yuma or swap to other fighters with distinct weapons, magic, and combat roles. Battles reward positioning, timely dodges, chained attacks, and managing the resources needed for powerful techniques, while Yuma can temporarily assume dragon form to deal immense damage at the risk of losing control. Between missions, the group travels across towns, fields, ruins, and enemy-controlled areas, taking optional requests, gathering materials, improving equipment, and raising relationships through conversations and dates. Musical “B.A.N.D.” abilities are the game’s signature support system, allowing party members to perform songs that boost allies or hinder foes, though using them also changes the rhythm of combat by demanding careful resource management.

Character chemistry carries much of the experience, with a likable ensemble whose bond events and romantic routes make downtime matter as much as dungeon fighting. The remaster includes the original campaign, bonus quests, cosmetics, and Refrain Mode, which adds Excella and Jinas as recruitable allies; that alternate version is best saved until after the main story because it changes key context. Its modest production values and occasionally repetitive areas show its handheld-era roots, but the polished anime character designs, energetic soundtrack, and approachable action combat remain appealing. Fans of Tales of, Sword Art Online, or lighter Sega-era JRPGs should find plenty to enjoy, especially if they value party relationships over demanding tactical depth.
