A ruined Soviet island becomes the center of a time-bending catastrophe in Singularity, a first-person shooter that blends Cold War paranoia, body horror, and pulpy science-fiction spectacle. You play Captain Nathaniel Renko, an American operative stranded on Katorga-12 after an anomaly throws him between a disastrous 1950s experiment and a devastated modern day. The mystery revolves around Element 99, a miraculous material whose development reshapes history in horrific ways. Its tone lands somewhere between BioShock’s isolated retro-futurism and the weapon-heavy aggression of classic Call of Duty campaigns, with a surprisingly focused conspiracy at its core.

Combat revolves around conventional firearms, exotic E99-powered weapons, and the Time Manipulation Device strapped to Renko’s arm. The TMD lets you rapidly age soldiers into dust, restore broken machinery, pull objects toward you, suspend targets in time, and move objects through the environment to solve light puzzles. Encounters regularly mix armed enemies with mutated creatures, asking you to manage ammunition, use cover, and exploit time powers rather than merely firing at everything in sight. Upgrades expand the device’s functions and improve weapons, while time shifts between the Soviet past and ruined present change routes, reveal story context, and create a steady stream of environmental problems to overcome.

What makes Singularity memorable is how naturally its central gimmick supports both fighting and exploration; turning a collapsed staircase back into a usable path feels just as satisfying as aging a monster before it reaches you. Katorga-12 is linear, but its laboratories, decaying industrial facilities, and abandoned Soviet architecture give each chapter a strong identity, helped by enjoyably grim creature design. The campaign is not a huge open-world adventure, and its old multiplayer modes are largely a historical curiosity today, but the single-player story remains the main attraction. Fans of BioShock, F.E.A.R., or Raven Software’s energetic shooters will find a smart, compact FPS with ideas that still stand apart from most of its era.
