Megacity S1-9 is a diseased cyberpunk fortress where organic war machines and authoritarian cruelty have become inseparable. Slave Zero X channels that nightmare into a fast, demanding 2.5D character-action brawler, following Shou, a rebel swordsman who bonds with an experimental biomechanical Slave to assassinate the tyrant Khan. The result is angry, stylish, and relentlessly violent, with the spirit of arcade-era action games filtered through grotesque bio-industrial imagery. Although it serves as a prequel to the original Slave Zero, its story stands well enough on its own for newcomers.

Combat revolves around aggressive sword strings, firearms, launchers, aerial follow-ups, evasive movement, and rapid changes between targets. Shou tears through squads of flesh-and-metal enemies by keeping them airborne, bouncing off walls, dashing across arenas, and turning successful hits into increasingly elaborate combo routes. Stages mix side-scrolling combat gauntlets with platforming, hazards, spectacle-heavy sequences, minibosses, and tense duels that demand careful timing rather than blind button mashing. A dedicated training mode is particularly valuable because the game expects players to learn its move set, while the escalating encounters can be punishing for anyone unfamiliar with character-action fundamentals.

Its strongest feature is the combination of old-school sprite work with moody 3D spaces, dramatic lighting, and an industrial drum-and-bass soundtrack that gives every fight a harsh 1990s edge. Enemy designs are appropriately unsettling, and boss battles feel like meaningful skill checks rather than disposable interruptions. Finishing the main campaign also unlocks the Crimson Citadel, a randomized survival tower built for score chasing and repeat runs, complete with online leaderboard competition. Fans of Strider, Devil May Cry, and difficult arcade brawlers will find plenty to admire, while players seeking a forgiving action game should expect to spend time practicing before Shou’s full potential clicks.
