A hand-built submarine carries young Merryn into a dangerous, storybook ocean after her fisherman father fails to return home. Song of the Deep is a moody Metroidvania adventure that trades fast platforming for the weighty momentum and eerie silence of deep-sea exploration. Its hand-painted ruins, bioluminescent caverns, and hostile wrecks create a melancholy fairy-tale atmosphere, while an omniscient narrator frames Merryn’s rescue mission as a tale of family, grief, and stubborn courage. The result feels gentler than a survival game but carries real tension whenever the dark water closes in.

Players pilot Merryn’s craft through a large interconnected map, following story objectives while constantly spotting sealed passages, unreachable treasure, and mechanisms that demand a future upgrade. Movement is deliberately physical: the submarine drifts, bumps against terrain, and must navigate currents, hazards, narrow tunnels, and environmental puzzles rather than simply racing from room to room. Combat relies on tools such as torpedoes, a mechanical claw, mines, and shields, with clever interactions often proving more useful than raw firepower; grabbing an enemy projectile and returning it is as satisfying as it sounds. New equipment expands both combat options and access to older regions, and the substantial collection of hidden artifacts gives completion-minded players plenty of reasons to revisit every corner.

What separates Song of the Deep from many Metroidvanias is its convincing underwater pace and its focus on machinery-driven problem solving. Bosses are large, readable encounters built around movement, timing, and using the right submarine systems, while the world’s secrets reward observation instead of demanding relentless execution. The campaign is largely single-player and linear in its emotional goal, yet its map supports detours and optional exploration without becoming overwhelming. Fans of Ori and the Blind Forest, Aquaria, or the exploration side of SteamWorld Dig should find a compact, polished adventure here, especially if they prefer atmosphere and discovery over punishing combat.
