Set in an alternate 18th century, Spirit Island casts players as powerful guardians of nature—storms, beasts, oceans, fire, dreams, and stranger forces—protecting their home from settlers who build towns, ravage the land, and leave spreading blight behind. The tone is tense but empowering: invaders arrive with an organized machine of exploration and development, while the island’s defenders gradually become strong enough to turn that machine against itself. Rather than conquering territory, the goal is to frighten and force the colonists from it.

Each turn revolves around carefully managing a spirit’s growth, placing Presence across the map, gaining energy, and choosing power cards to play. Powers resolve in fast and slow phases, creating satisfying tactical puzzles as players disrupt an impending build, push enemies into danger, defend the Dahan inhabitants, or set up devastating counterattacks after the invaders strike. Elemental symbols on cards unlock stronger innate abilities, so effective play depends on building combinations rather than simply using the most expensive attack available. Difficulty scales through adversary rules and scenario modifiers, while controlling multiple spirits alone offers a demanding solo challenge; cooperative sessions shine because teammates must coordinate timing, positioning, and scarce defensive options.

Its greatest strength is asymmetry with real mechanical weight. A spirit of the ocean manipulates coastal spaces and pulls invaders into the sea, while a lightning-focused spirit accelerates slower powers, and a defensive earth spirit holds ground through brute resilience. The escalating invader sequence creates constant pressure, yet victories feel earned through planning instead of luck or raw damage.
