Tails of Iron (v1.52 & ALL DLC)

A battered rat kingdom stands between its young heir and total ruin, giving Tails of Iron the weight of a dark fairy tale with blood on its paws. You play Redgi, heir to the throne, as he fights to reclaim his home from the invading Frog Clan and its hulking warlord, Greenwart. The hand-drawn 2D world looks deceptively storybook-like, but its muddy battlefields, insect-infested tunnels, and war-torn villages create a harsh medieval fantasy atmosphere. Doug Cockle’s gravelly narration adds a campfire-legend quality to a campaign built around revenge, family, and survival.

Combat is deliberate, demanding, and closer to a side-scrolling Soulslike than a casual action adventure. Redgi blocks, rolls, parries, fires arrows, and commits to weighty melee swings, so learning an enemy’s tells matters far more than mashing attacks. Frogs, zombies, grubs, and oversized generals each demand different timing and positioning, while brutal boss encounters test whether you have mastered the fundamentals. Between fights, you travel across six interconnected biomes, take on hunts and side jobs for gold, gather cooking ingredients for restorative meals, and find blueprints to forge stronger weapons and armor. Equipment changes more than appearance: heavy protection absorbs punishment but can make dodging slower, encouraging you to build around either resilience, mobility, or a preferred weapon type.

Its strongest feature is the contrast between lovingly animated animal characters and genuinely punishing violence. Companions can join Redgi on selected missions, and unusual touches such as a armored mole transport give the kingdom personality beyond its bleak war story. Progress is focused rather than endlessly open-ended, but hidden paths, optional objectives, gear combinations, and demanding fights give completion-minded players plenty to pursue. Tails of Iron suits players who enjoy the tension and precision of Dark Souls or Hollow Knight, but want a more compact, hand-crafted 2D adventure; newcomers can enjoy it too, provided they are willing to learn from repeated defeats.
