Play begins in the Cell stage, where you swim, eat, avoid predators, and evolve basic body parts, before moving into a third-person Creature stage focused on social encounters, combat, nesting, and exploration. Tribe and Civilization stages shift toward simplified real-time strategy, asking you to manage groups, collect resources, claim territory, trade, or overpower rival settlements. Space stage becomes the longest and most open portion, letting you pilot a custom ship between procedurally arranged star systems, complete missions, terraform worlds, establish colonies, and manage relationships with alien powers. The Collection also broadens the late game with Galactic Adventures content, adding mission-based planetary excursions and tools for making and sharing your own scenarios.

Its modular editor suite is still the star attraction, because it makes surprisingly expressive creatures from a drag-and-drop pile of limbs, mouths, eyes, and animations. Creations populate other players’ worlds through online sharing, so the galaxy can feel stranger and more varied than a purely solo procedural sandbox. Individual stages are shallow beside dedicated games such as Civilization, The Sims, or a full RTS, but their variety keeps the campaign moving. Spore Collection suits newcomers who want an approachable creative toy and veterans who enjoy experimenting, collecting bizarre designs, and turning a ridiculous animal into a space-age superpower.
