A filthy, vertiginous tower becomes the hunting ground for one of fantasy gaming’s most memorable antiheroes. Styx: Master of Shadows is a deliberately paced stealth adventure set in the dark fantasy world of Of Orcs and Men, casting players as an ancient, sharp-tongued goblin chasing both wealth and the truth behind his creation. The Tower of Akenash rises around the sacred World-Tree, its human guards, elven sentries, laboratories, prisons, and hidden passages forming a hostile maze. Its mood is grimy and tense rather than heroic: Styx is small, vulnerable, and at his best when nobody realizes he is nearby.

Each mission asks you to infiltrate guarded areas, steal valuables, eliminate a target, uncover information, or reach an escape route without raising alarm. Styx cannot win prolonged fights, so success comes from reading patrol routes, hiding in dark corners, climbing ledges, slipping through vents, and quietly disposing of isolated enemies. A flexible skill tree lets you tailor his tools toward stealth, assassination, or mobility, while Amber powers offer temporary invisibility, enhanced vision, and the ability to create a controllable clone that distracts guards, triggers mechanisms, or scouts dangerous rooms. Optional treasures and lore fragments reward thorough exploration, and missions generally provide enough alternate paths to recover when a plan goes wrong.

Akenash is the real star, built as a layered vertical fortress where balconies, sewers, workshops, and aristocratic chambers connect in convincing, often ingenious ways. The clone mechanic gives the game a tactical identity beyond simply crouching behind crates, especially when puzzles demand that Styx and his duplicate work in separate places. Its checkpoints and enemy detection can feel unforgiving, and the deliberate movement will not suit players expecting an action brawler, but that vulnerability is central to the tension. Fans of Thief, Dishonored’s stealth-focused routes, or the later Styx sequel find a rewarding old-school infiltration game here, while patient newcomers get a strong introduction to pure stealth design.
