The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria trades the usual heroic march across Middle-earth for a scrappy expedition into its deepest, darkest halls, led by a company answering Lord Gimli’s call. Its mood sits somewhere between cozy workshop management and tense underground horror: one moment you are singing while smelting ore, the next you are scrambling through darkness as Orcs and worse things close in. Familiar Tolkien locations and Dwarven history give the adventure more character than a generic crafting game.

Every expedition revolves around pushing farther into the mines, gathering wood, stone, ore, food, and precious resources before returning to a defended camp. Players craft weapons, armor, tools, meals, torches, and increasingly elaborate Dwarven structures, while restoring ruined forges and landmarks unlocks stronger equipment and new crafting tiers. Combat is straightforward third-person action built around blocking, dodging, stamina, and melee strikes, so preparation matters as much as reflexes when enemy patrols or cave-in threats appear. The full campaign works alone, but online co-op supports up to eight players, making resource runs, base building, and dangerous boss encounters considerably more manageable.

Moria’s shifting layout gives repeat playthroughs a useful sense of discovery, even if the environments can become visually repetitive after long sessions underground. Building systems encourage practical strongholds rather than purely decorative homes, and the ability to repair, reclaim, and repopulate ancient Dwarven spaces fits the fantasy especially well. Survival veterans will recognize touches of Valheim and Deep Rock Galactic, though Return to Moria is slower, more crafting-focused, and firmly rooted in Tolkien lore rather than constant combat spectacle. It suits Lord of the Rings fans and cooperative survival groups best, while solo players who enjoy deliberate gathering and base progression can still find a satisfying, atmospheric descent.
