The Station

A silent research facility drifts above an alien world caught in civil war, and every empty corridor suggests that a mission has gone disastrously wrong. Progress comes from searching laboratories, crew quarters, engineering bays, and observation decks for clues left in emails, recordings, documents, and environmental details. Puzzles generally involve restoring power, operating machinery, locating access codes, and using the station’s systems to open new routes through the facility. A projection device lets you reconstruct fragments of past events, creating ghostly scenes that reveal how the crew’s investigation unravels and where each person was when the crisis struck. There is no combat or conventional character progression; the challenge comes from connecting narrative evidence, reading the environment carefully, and navigating a compact station whose layout gradually becomes familiar.

What distinguishes The Station is its focus on the ethical side of alien contact rather than simply treating its extraterrestrials as monsters or targets. Its visual design sells the contrast between practical, lived-in human modules and the strange biological and technological ideas behind the alien civilization being observed. The story has the intimate, clue-driven structure of Gone Home or Tacoma, but its atmosphere leans closer to a restrained space thriller in the vein of Soma, without that game’s survival horror pressure.
